Quarried in the areas of Carrara, Versilia and Garfagnana, Calacatta is a marble with a saccharoid structure, characterised by a creamy-white background and pronounced veins that may be brown, golden yellow, pinkish brown, green or grey.
The veining is highly variable, so that one can find areas with a distinct pattern alternating with areas with large white zones.
Since it is a sedimentary sandstone marble, crystals and grey rocks can also be found in Calacatta, evenly distributed, which is considered a typical characteristic of this marble.
Please note: currently available slabs of Calacatta have few or no golden veins, but rather veins in shades of grey and/or taupe.
Also typical of Calacatta are the so-called ‘resin castings’, which are applied directly onto the marble block before it is cut into slabs, in order to fill any cracks caused by detachment from the marble.
following detachment from the quarry face.
